The station building that is present in the city of Mountain View, CA today is a replica of the original Southern Pacific depot built in 1888.

A commemorative plaque contains the following text:

The Mountain View Train Depot
In 1888, at the request of local residents, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a depot at the Mountain View Station, at a cost of $4000. The second floor was used as living quarters for the station agent.
By 1892, ten passenger trains stopped daily at the station. Today, the number has increased to 76 trains per day. By the late 1950's, the depot was in serious disrepair and in 1959 the Southern Pacific Railroad had it removed.
Today's modern recreation of the original train station building was dedicated on the City's Centennial - November 7, 2002.

It is worth noting that as of the Caltrain timetable effective 1 August 2005, 84 trains will be stopping at the station.
